Born in 1958. Representative of Nippon Design Centre. Professor at Musashino Art University. Producing fresh communication-project in multiple fields by viewing everyday-life from completely different angle. At the Opening and Closing ceremonies for Nagano Olympics and promotion project for 2005 Aichi Expo, he designed image that was deeply rooted to Japanese culture. At the field of product design he worked on Nikka Whisky, AGF, and rice and rice wine from various areas of Japan. Also, at renewal project of Matsuya-Ginza, he materialized complex design direction which crossover space to graphic. In the project of signboard for UMEDA Hospital (Yamaguchi Pref.) and KATTA Hospital (Miyagi Pref.) he showed the possibility of new communication through touching-feeling. On the other hand, at exhibitions of "Macaroni for Architects", "RE-DESIGN - Daily Products of The 21st Century.", "HAPTIC - Awakening of Five Senses", he supervised and conduct that many creators participate as a producer. "Re-Design Exhibition" is now traveling around the world, and through the exhibition he was given International Industrial Design Biennale Grand Prizes(for both Industrial and Graphic Design) and Mainichi Design Award in 2000. From year 2001, He became board member of MUJI and through its advertising campaign, ADC Grand Prize was given to him in 2003. For design in publication, he won Kodansha Publishing Culture Award, Memorial prize of Hiromu Hara, Yusaku Kamekura Design Award. His series of design works were awarded Japan Inter Design Forum Prize and other awards abroad. His recent publication "Design of Design"(Iwanami Shoten) won the 26th Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities.

Kodansha Publishing Culture Award, Japan Inter Design Forum Prize, the Japan Sign Design Association Grand Prix, the New York Art Directors Club (ADC) Award, Memorial prize of Hiromu Hara (the 13th), International Industrial Design Biennale Grand Prizes(for both Industrial and Graphic Design) ,Yusaku Kamekura Design Award (the 3rd), Mainichi Design Award, and Tokyo ADC Grand Prize.
